1. A very common relationship mistake that many singles make is to spend all of their time either talking about their ex or talking about their lack of an ex. It’s ok if you’ve never been in a real relationship; it’s really nothing to be ashamed. However, the person you are dating doesn’t need to know all about this on the first date. If they ask you about your dating past, you can be honest with them, but try move to a new topic after a couple of minutes and not give too much detail. You do not want to be embarrassed if it does not work out and you have told someone intimate stories about yourself. Neither do you want to regret sharing your private life with someone who does not value you as a person.
2. As a type of defence against taking a leap of faith with love, we tell other people, and ourselves, that we aren’t ready to date. Or that we aren’t really looking for anything serious right now. Instead of running from what could be a great relationship, hold your ground and see what could happen. The concept of love can be scary and exciting all at the same time, and in many cases, our fear can hold us back and prevent us from allowing anyone to love us. Instead of thinking about what could go wrong in the relationship, try to focus on the positive things.
3. When you are on your first date with someone new, try not to get carried away. Sure you could end up marrying the person, but let’s be honest, at this stage; it’s too soon to really know. Take a deep breath and just enjoy the date. And if you have more dates, enjoy those too. If you do marry the person, you will have enjoyed every minute of spending time with them. However, if you don’t marry the person, you won’t feel like all of your dreams were ripped from your grasp.
4. Don’t be too overbearing. If you are constantly calling and texting the person you are interested in, they will never be able to tell if they miss you. By giving the person some space, the relationship will be more balanced, and when you see each other again, you won’t feel like you already told them all of your best stories through text and email!
5. Maybe it has been a while since you’ve been in a serious relationship. Well, don’t let that hold you back. Many times, if singles haven’t met anyone within a certain time frame, they convince themselves that they are “expired” and that they should just give up on the possibility of love. Remember that love is timeless, and people fall in love at all different ages.
6. Many times singles admit that the love they spent so much time looking for was right in front of them. Just because you are already friends with someone, that doesn’t mean that you should not consider them to be an option. Sure it can be awkward to transition a friendship into a romantic relationship, but sometimes it could be the best decision you’ve ever made.
If you have made or are in the process of making some of these common relationship mistakes, don’t worry! Any situation can be savaged, so by making a few adjustments, you can get back on the right track. Just remember to be yourself and have fun and enjoy being single because you won’t be single forever, and the last thing you want to do is regret not enjoying your single life once you’re married with three kids!
