Parenting Toddler – 9 Ideas to Help You

A true test to toddler discipline is the ability for parents to deal with an uncontrollable child. When parents don’t know how to handle their child’s poor behavior, it’s time to do something about it.

The following are 9 strategies parents can implement in the discipline of their child:

1. Your child needs to calm down to focus. An upset toddler won’t listen unless he is relaxed.

2. Maintain a soothing voice. Avoid using a menacing tone; otherwise, your child will be scared of you.

3. Listen to what your child is saying. It’s very important to understand what caused your child to get that upset, so listen without interrupting.

4. Take your child to a peaceful place. Where you and your child can communicate with no disturbances.

5. Avoid allowing your child to notice your frustration. It’s very important to stay calm and collected so you and your child can communicate better.

6. Don’t attempt to talk to your child if he’s still upset. Our reasoning skills are limited when we are upset.

7. Don’t surrender to your child’s outbursts. After all that’s what he wants. If your child controls the outcome of his bad behavior, he’ll continue for as long as you allow it.

8. Redirect your child’s attention. Distract your child with something new and of interest to him. Most of the time children forget about the tantrum and move on.

9. Inform your child that such behavior will not let him get what he wants. If your child understands he won’t get what he wants with a tantrum, most likely he won’t even do one.

Toddler discipline can drive parents off the wall; however, even at a very young age a toddler is able to understand what he can or can’t do with the proper parent approach. So stay calm, be consistent, don’t give in, communicate and listen, you can improve your child’s behavior.
