Swinging is now often affectionately referred to as ‘The Lifestyle’, however, this was not always the case. In the early-mid twentieth century swinging was often call ‘wife swapping’. Media attention popularized the term ‘Swinging’. Whatever name you choose for it, swinging has always been controversial, but attitudes have changed over the past century.
Swingers clubs and websites have popped up all over as the practice becomes more widely accepted. In Ontario, Canada swingers clubs were legalized in 2005 and have been gaining widespread acceptance since then. As opposed to polygamy, swinging promotes healthy relationships between two people, with non-monogamous sexual activity as an activity both individuals in the couple can enjoy.
The average swinger is more liberal then then the average person. The most clear difference in the attitudes of swingers were their views on pre-marital sex, birth control, abortion, homosexuality and sex on TV. Swingers also report a higher level of satisfaction with their own sex life.
Toni (2009) further states that men are the one who brings up the issue of swinging and the women are the ones who keep the couples involved. The ladies are the people that hold the swingers community together says Toni (2009).
Swinging can not only help to enhance a couples sexual relationship, but their emotional one as well. Couples often go through immense pressures due to affairs. Swinging eliminates the sexual motivation for individuals to have an affair and thereby removes the deceit and dishonesty from a relationship.
Research has shown that swinging couples rate their relationships as happier and healthier than average. Swinging may even help to stabilize relationships, prolong family ties, and enrich the lives of couples.
Swinging has been criticized on multiple fronts. Religiously, for its its supposedly defiling the sacred nature of sexual relations. Practically, for the possible health dangers involved.
Swingers have countered the arguments against their lifestyle by making strong distinctions between the sex and love portions of a relationship. They maintain that sex can be had without violating the sanctity of the love in a relationship. Strict condom use policies are also in place at most swingers events.
However you see it, the swinging lifestyle is becoming more and more prominent and the more you know the better.
