What Should I Write on My Wedding Invitation if We Are Not Serving Dinner, but Lots of Appetizers Instead?

We are also having wine and beer. The wedding doesn't start until 7:30, so the reception won't begin until 8:15 or so…

Suggestion:

Personally I don't think an announcement of what will be served at the reception belongs on the invitation at all. Their expectations are their problem, not yours. "Reception to follow at …" should suffice. Or, if you are using a separate card, state that light hors d'œuvres will be served at the reception – they'll know no dinner and to not depend on that as their evening meal.

Cocktail reception

Why are you only having appetizers instead of dinner? Is it because of the time?

BYOF

I'm LOL'ing at BYOF…
But seriously – you address it as a cocktail reception. Most people understand that means appetizers and finger foods.

My brother did this at his wedding and everyone got very drunk because they didn't eat enough food and they didn't state it was going to be only appetizers. I agree with the others, say it will be a cocktail reception.

Indicate that it will be a light fare occasion with hearty hors d' oeuvres, wine and beer.

I don't agree with the word "cocktail". That implies a liquor bar, and also says nothing of the type of food being served.

How about: Cake, finger foods, beer and wine will be served.

There should be no misunderstandings at all then.

The famous TD: OK, here's the definition of cocktail, and it might be "made" with wine, but wine alone, or beer is NOT a cocktail.
