When Getting Married, Forget About Wedding Stationary

Yes, all couples should forget about wedding stationary! That is, if they mean their invitations, thank you cards, place cards, wedding programs and such. Why? Because “stationary” is one word that is commonly misunderstood, misspelled and loosely used.

According to the online version of the Merriam-Webster dictionary, stationary means to be “fixed in a station, course or mode; immobile; unchanging in condition.”  In short, not moving.  Surely, couples would not want their wedding stationary.  The whole point of the ceremony is to move forward and on to a new life of togetherness.  The whole celebration should be lively and dynamic!

On the other hand, in almost all cases when the term “wedding stationary” is mentioned, the speaker is usually referring to “stationery.”  Once again, the online Merriam-Webster defines it as “materials (as paper, pens and ink) for writing or typing; letter paper usually accompanied with matching envelopes.”

With this definition, there is no doubt that marriage ceremonies would involve stationeries, instead of being stationary, unless referring to how the bride and groom in front of the officiating person should be during the whole proceeding.

So when talking about stationeries, the first thing that would come to mind is the invitation because it is the formal announcement of the couple’s ceremonial occasion.

There are couples who choose to be more personal and opt to make their own wedding invitations. The first thing that they should consider in making their invitation is the design.  If in case they still do not have any particular design in mind, yet, they can start with old invitations that they got in the past. They can then, set aside the invitations that they liked the most and get inspiration from them.

Initial idea sketches on scratch pads would be the next step.  The brainstorming process can prove to be a very good bonding moment for the couple or even with some relatives.

A picture of the bride and groom and the message in their own handwriting can also be used in the wedding stationery to create the impression that the couple are really “hands-on” in every detail of their wedding.

And of course, if a couple has to make their own wedding invitations, they would also need the envelopes and seals that would go with it.  Perfect place to find materials for this project are bookstores, arts and craft stores and several online stores. Sometimes it is good to start with checking out the cyberspace for information because the couple would be able to see several designs, options and ideas without leaving the house.  It would be very time and cost-efficient for busy soon-to-wed partners.
