“Traditional” or “Classic” Photography
Most wedding photography for many years was taken in this style. Bride, groom, bridesmaids, groomsmen, family, and other honored guests gather, usually after the ceremony, to pose for formal photographs. With this style of photography, the poses and locations are limited because the goal is to finish these formal poses so that the wedding party and family can join the guests. While this style can help guarantee that no one is left out of the photos and allows people to know when their picture is being taken, the photos will generally look very posed.
Photo-journalistic Photography
A popular option in recent years for wedding photography is the photo-journalistic style. Photojournalism is creating a visual narrative of events. Unlike the traditional wedding photographer, a photo-journalistic photographer will not have a checklist of posed shots, but will instead follow the bride and groom and guests naturally through the day, and will therefore catch the traditional “must have” moments of the day on film. Pictures will not be posed, and people may or may not know they are having their picture taken. Also, many of the photos will be candid, so people may not know their picture is being taken at the time. While the candid photos will lend spontaneity, sometimes candid shots can be less flattering.
Illustrative Wedding Photography
This style ultimately reflects the artistic point of view of the photographer more than either traditional or photo-journalistic photography. While traditional photography involves formal poses and grouping, this style rarely includes such linear, portrait-style images. However, unlike the spontaneity of the photo-journalistic style, this style does involve intentional composition and lighting design. While the photography can be fun, the look of the photos will be neither spontaneous nor traditional, so the photographer’s point of view can take center stage. This style can also be time-consuming and take the party away from the guests.
