If you want to use wedding orchids, you don’t even really need to debate whether or not it is the right choice. Our modern wedding, the white dress, organ music, veil and bridesmaids/groomsman are all from England. The modern day wedding got its start in Victorian England, and orchids have been an integral part from the beginning. It used to be really difficult to grow orchids well, especially in England, where it is rainy and cool or cold most of the year. So, orchids had to be imported from the Pacific, or grown somewhere else in greenhouses and brought to weddings in England. Of course, that made these wedding orchids very expensive. Not every family could afford orchids, so it became a symbol of wealth and status to have orchids at your wedding. Only the most powerful, influential and wealthy families could afford orchids, so it became a enviable symbol very quickly.
Of course, now growing orchids is not difficult at all, but they still bring the same amount of pomp, grace and elegance to your wedding arrangements. I’m sure many of you know that different flowers stand for different things when you incorporate them into the bride’s bouquet. A rose stands for love, no matter what color you use. Lilacs and daisies are a symbol of innocence, and hydrangeas stand for loyalty and friendship. The orchid in your bouquet stands for beauty, and is central to your special day. No other day comes close to your wedding when it comes to how much time and energy you spend on how you look! Or money, lets face it girls: those dresses don’t come cheap. No other flower in your bouquet can accurately reflect your investment of time and effort like the orchid can.
Also, orchids just go well with any flower theme that you might think of. There are thousands upon thousands of orchid hybrids, so you can almost guarantee to find on that fits your theme. Using a white orchid with highlights, you can build the foundation of your bouquet or arrangement. You can find white orchids with blue, red, yellow or purple highlights. Also, orchids are rather large flowers, so it really sets the flowing tone of the whole piece as it spills out around the other flowers.
Orchids, compared to other flowers, are tough as nails. Since they come naturally from tropical climates, orchids are very resistant to heat and moisture. It will take an orchid much longer out in the sun and heat to wilt than almost any other flower. Since spring and summer weddings are very popular, this makes the orchid ideal once again.
When thinking about what flowers to use for your wedding, don’t pass on using wedding orchids. They really are a great flower to build the rest of your arrangement around!
